Bed size confusion!
Over the past 25 years of being in the bedding industry there is plenty of confusion to bed sizes. Rightful so because in the United States there is 9 different size beds commonly found whether its a regular bed or a waterbed. The explanations below should help clear up some of the confusion.
Eastern King (EK 78"w x 80"l) This size is common to beds whether its an innerspring, air bed, memory foam bed, latex bed, or soft side waterbed. However, a wood framed waterbed or hardside king is California King (Cal K 72" x 84"l) There is no such size as an EK wood framed waterbed. Only soft side waterbeds are made in Eastern King.
California King (CK 72"w x 84"l) First of all the term California or Cal refers mostly to the length of the bed. All Cal. size beds are 84" long whether its a Cal. King, Cal. Queen, or Super Twin. You can find Cal King beds in innerspring, air beds, memory foam beds laytex beds, soft side waterbeds and wood framed waterbeds. The thing to remember is the all wood framed waterbeds are Cal. length.
Queen (60"w x 80"l) This size bed is found as an innerspring, air bed, memory foam bed, laytex bed, or soft side waterbed. A wood frame waterbed has never been made in this size. All wood frame waterbeds were made Cal. length (84").
California Queen (Cal. Q 60"w x 84'l) This size bed is found as an innerspring, air bed, memory foam bed, laytex bed and, wood framed waterbeds. Soft side waterbed are not made in Cal. Queen. If you have a wood framed waterbed and is queen then it is automatically Cal. Queen. All wood framed waterbeds are Cal length. Notice that the only difference from Queen to Cal Queen is the length. The width is the same.
Super Single or Super Twin (48"w x 84"l) This size is found only as wood framed waterbeds. Notice the Cal. length.
Full or Double (54"w x 75"l) Why we have two names for one size is a mystery but, they both mean the same thing. This size bed is found as an innerspring bed, air bed, memory foam bed, latex bed and, soft side waterbeds. Full size hasn't been made as a wood framed waterbed in 25 years.
Full XL (54"w x 80"l) XL stands for extra long. This size bed is found as an innerspring bed, air bed, memory foam bed, latex bed. Waterbeds, hardside or soft side are not made in this size.
Twin or Single (39"w x 75"l) Once again we have two names that mean the same thing. This size bed is found as an innerspring bed, air bed, memory foam bed, latex bed and, soft side waterbeds. Wood framed waterbeds are not made in this size.
Twin XL (39"w x 80"l) XL again stands for extra long. This size bed is found as an innerspring bed, air bed, memory foam bed, and latex bed. Waterbeds whether soft side or wood framed are not made in this size.
